About

Why, and how, can the subjective experience of another differ from my own? How can a population of neurons, modeled by simple differential equations and learning rules, give rise to the kind of complexity we call experience? As a foothold toward these questions, I pursue the mathematical description of neural activity from both microscopic and macroscopic scales.

By formalizing the mechanisms that contemporary neural networks abstract away — sparsity, plasticity, and neuromodulation-driven state modulation — I move in both directions: from formal description toward an understanding of neural dynamics, and from neurophysiological findings toward proposals for new machine learning models.
